Dua asking Allah for every type of Goodness

Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه) narrated that a man said: “O Messenger of Allah, I heard your supplication last night, and the part of it that reached me of it, was that you said: 

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي ذَنْبِي، وَوَسِّعْ لِي فِي دَارِي، وَبَارِكْ لِي فِي رِزْقِي

Allahummaghfirli dhanbi, wa wassi` li fi dari, wa barik li fi rizqi

(O Allah! Forgive me my sins, make spacious for me my home and Bless the provisions which You have provided me with i.e. increase the good in it)

The man said: ‘Do you see that they (i.e. these words) leave off anything?’”

[Narrated by Ahmad, 27/144, No. 16599, at-Tirmidhi No. 3500, An-Nasa’i in al-Sunan al-Kubra, 6/24, No. 9828, and at-Tabarani in al-Mujam al-Awsat, 7/73, No. 6891 & as-Saghir, 2/196, No. 1019, Ibn Abi Shaybah, 10/281, Abu Ya’la, 13/205, No. 7273, and Al-Albani classed it as hasan in Da’eef At-Tirmidhi, No. 3794 and Sahih Al-Jami Al-Sagheer, 1/399 No. 1265]

There is some weakness in its chain of narrators, except that the supplication mentioned has a supporting narration reported by Ahmad [in his Musnad’, 4/63] from the Hadeeth of a man from among the Sahabah (RadiyAllahu anhum), also reported by an-Nasa’ee and Ibn as-Sunnee, from the Hadeeth of Abu Moosā (RadiyAllāhu ‘anhu). And this is a magnificent supplication which has not left off anything of al-Khair (pure goodness), except that it has included it. Al-Albāni (Rahimahullāh) – in his book ‘Da’eef Sunan at-Tirmidhee’, pg. 407 – said: It is da’eef (weak, i.e. in its chain of narrators) but the (meaning of the) supplication is ‘Hasan’ (good, acceptable) due to the other supporting narrations. In ‘Saheeh al-Jāmi’ as-Sagheer’, no. 1265, he (Rahimahullah) declared it to be Hasan (good, acceptable).

Other scholars who declared the narration of Abu Moosa (RadiyAllāhu anhu) to be Saheeh’ (authentic) are: Imām an-Nawawee (Rahimahullāh) in his book ‘al-Adhkār’; al-Allāmah Ib-nul-Qayyim (Rahimahullah) in Zād al-Ma’ād’ and Imām Ibnu-l-Mulaqqin (Rahimahullāh) in ‘al-Badr al- Muneer.

Explanation of the Hadeeth:

The Prophet’s (ﷺ) saying: “O Allah! Forgive me my sins…” means: whatever has occurred from me of slips, shortcomings and the doing of that which is not proper. And forgiveness of sins is the foundation of every kind of goodness in the Dunya (worldly life) and the Akhirah (hereafter).

Allah, the Most High, said:

وَأَنِ ٱسْتَغْفِرُوا۟ رَبَّكُمْ ثُمَّ تُوبُوٓا۟ إِلَيْهِ يُمَتِّعْكُم مَّتَٰعًا حَسَنًا إِلَىٰٓ أَجَلٍ مُّسَمًّى وَيُؤْتِ كُلَّ ذِى فَضْلٍ فَضْلَهُ 

“And seek the forgiveness of your Lord (the Mighty, the Majestic), and then turn to Him in repentance, He will grant you good provisions, until an appointed term, and give every possessor of bounty his bounty.” [Soorah Hood (11):3]

It is for this reason that it was appropriate that the request for forgiveness precede asking Allāh for a spacious house and Barakah (increase of goodness) in one’s provisions.

The Prophet’s (ﷺ) saying: “…and make spacious for me my home…” means: make spacious for me my place of residence in this worldly life, since its spaciousness is an aspect of happiness or success in the worldly life.

Alternatively, the intended meaning might be al-Qabr (the grave), since it is ad-Dar al-Haqeeqeeyah (the real home). Or the intended meaning might be al-Jannah (Paradise), since it is the home of permanence and the everlasting bliss which will never change or cease to exist.

In fact, there is nothing that prohibits this expression (i.e. home) from encompassing all of these meanings. The Prophet’s (ﷺ) saying: “..and bless the provisions You have provided me with (i.e. increase the good in it)”

means: make (my provisions) blessed and preserved with goodness.

The meaning of ‘barakah’ in the provisions is ‘thabatu-h’ (i.e. not losing what you have) and ‘ziyadatu-hu’ (i.e. an increase over what you already have).

A Spacious abode is among the things which bring Happiness

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

“Four things are part of happiness:
1) a righteous wife,
2) a spacious abode,
3) a good neighbor,
4) and a comfortable mount.

And four things are part of misery:
1) a bad neighbor,
2) a bad wife,
3) a small abode,
4) and a bad mount.”
